Where to stay

Hotels in Munich

Three hotels in the same corner of Munich, a few minutes apart — each one gives you a different city, and each one worth what it costs.

← Explore Munich The city

Munich is a big city — bigger than it feels once you’re walking it. The three hotels here all sit in the same part of it: the streets around the Hauptbahnhof, a few minutes apart on foot, with the Altstadt a short walk east. Same corner of the city, so you’d expect them to feel much the same. They don’t, and that was the surprise.

The Travel Without Chaos Hotel Index looks at three things: how simple it feels to arrive, whether the place has a character of its own, and what’s waiting just outside the door — its location. Each scored out of five. Only hotels worth recommending make it this far, so the scores start from a high floor. None of the three is the cheapest option in the city, and none is the most expensive — every hotel here is chosen for what it actually delivers, not for its price tag alone.

EASY

Arabest Munich

Schwanthalerstraße · a broad, busy street minutes from the Hauptbahnhof

Schwanthalerstraße is broad and busy, and the station is close enough that you can be moving within minutes of stepping out the door. It isn’t a street people seek out for its own sake, and Arabest doesn’t pretend otherwise — that closeness is the whole point. Check-in is fast, and nothing along the way asks anything of you. The lobby is small and functional: not somewhere to linger, but nothing in your way either. The room is well equipped, with a kitchen and a washing machine — a level of independence most hotels don’t offer. The window faces the street, and the sound of the city comes in with it. This is a base that runs itself, for the traveller who moves early and comes back late.

Simplicity is the point here — nothing asks anything of you. The character is understated, and that’s exactly what this hotel is for.

PERSONALITY

Arthotel Munich

Paul-Heyse-Straße · one block over, still in the station quarter

One block away, and the register changes. “Art” in a hotel name is a kind of promise, and here it’s one they keep — the theme runs right through the place. The lobby is spacious and consistent: statues, paintings, objects, all placed with care, nothing left to chance. Check-in is personal and service-oriented, with the details given online confirmed again at reception — part of the welcome rather than a formality. The corridors twist and turn with art objects the whole way along, and every room door carries a short text, a dedication to a person or an event. The room itself is small and complete: light wood tones, a courtyard view, and “Herzlich willkommen” in three different spots. The lobby has a buzz to it — families, couples, people travelling alone. It’s a bigger hotel than it first looks, and it makes room for all of them.

Character is what defines Arthotel — the theme is carried all the way through. Simplicity holds its own alongside it: the personal welcome is part of the experience.

RESTFUL

Hotel Metropol

Mittererstraße · a side street a few minutes from the station

Mittererstraße is a side street rather than a main road, and you feel it the moment you turn off the bigger one — not a dramatic difference, just quieter by where it sits. Check-in is digital, quick and easy, and the staff are attentive to the details. The room is where Metropol comes into its own: the bed stands out, not only for its size but for the weight of the duvet and the feel of the pillows. The whole room is built around sleep. The window faces the quieter side of the street and the morning light arrives at the right angle, so you stay in bed a little longer than planned. Wide corridors, carpet soaking up the sound, a minibar quietly restocked. Small things — and they add up.

Location is the strength — the side street gives you quiet without losing the station proximity. The character is quiet too, in keeping with the calm the room is built around.

Which one fits?

Which one is right for you?

All three are worth staying at — the difference is in character, not in quality. Arabest Munich if you want it easy: fast check-in, a kitchen, a base that runs itself. Arthotel Munich if you want personality: art in the corridors and a dedication on every door. Hotel Metropol if you want it restful: a quiet side street, morning light, and a room built around sleep.
