How the Hotel Index works
Every city above gets the same treatment: three hotels, scored out of five on three things. Simplicity is how easy it is to just arrive and be there — check-in, the room, the basics working without a fight. Character is whether the place has an identity of its own, something that couldn’t be swapped into any other city without losing anything. And Location isn’t just proximity to a landmark — it’s how the hotel connects to the way you actually want to move through the city, morning and night.
None of the three wins. A high Simplicity score next to a lower Character score isn’t a flaw — it’s a trade-off, and which one matters more depends on the kind of stay you’re after. That’s why every city here gets three hotels, not one: three different answers to the same question of where to stay, so you can pick the version of the city you actually want. A quick, easy stay near the station suits one trip; a hotel with a personality of its own, further from the obvious spots, suits another; and sometimes the right answer is somewhere in between the two.

No hotel pays to be featured, scored, or recommended here. Every room on this page has been slept in, and every cost paid independently — that’s the only way in and the only way any of it stays honest. Some of the links through to booking pages may be affiliate links; if you book through one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you, but it has no bearing on which hotels appear or how they score.
Every hotel is stayed in for at least a night, the same way any other guest would experience it: checking in at the desk, sleeping in the room, waking up to whatever the street outside actually sounds like the next morning. That’s the same standard every hotel here is held to, whether it’s a five-minute walk from the main square or tucked away on an ordinary residential street most visitors never see. Each hotel page also links back to the city it’s in — and the reverse is true too, so a city guide and its hotels are always one click apart. If a city above doesn’t have a hotels card yet, it usually means the location guide has published but the hotel stays haven’t — that page is next, not skipped. Wherever you’re headed next, that’s the short version of where to stay in Europe, city by city: three real options, never a single verdict.
